According to the National Cancer Institute, almost half of the cancers diagnosed each year in France might be avoided by acting on cancer risk factors. Correction or modification of modifiable cancer risk factors plays an essential role in cancer prevention. And all the ideas seem interesting. A British brand has launched a prevention campaign that is original to say the least! Discovery.
Prevent breast cancer and testicular cancer
A British supermarket brand (Morrisons) has decided to join forces with the British public health authorities (NHS) to act in the prevention of two cancers:
- The cancer be youthe most common cancer in women and responsible for more than 12,000 deaths each year in France;
- The testicular cancerof which the number of new cases estimated in France in 2018 was almost 2,800.
Together, they chose an original way of conveying prevention messages to the British, insert prevention advice on underwear labels. These messages encourage men and women to consult their doctor at the slightest sign suggestive of breast or testicular cancer. Placed in underwear, these messages are visible every day!
Messages written on underwear labels
These underwear, from the Nutmeg brand, carry advice developed by the NHS, and are sold in the 240 stores of the Morrisons brand. The first underwear developed were boxer shorts to convey prevention messages regarding testicular cancer in men. And bras are in development for messages aimed at women regarding breast cancer. Beyond the messages directly readable on the labels alongside the usual information on size and maintenance, users of the underwear will be able to scan a QR code for more detailed information on the two cancers targeted by this prevention campaign.
This innovative prevention campaign does not target modifiable cancer risk factors, but aims to inform the general public regarding the first signs abnormal which should lead you to consult a doctor quickly. For example, for breast cancer, it is essential that women – but also men, since a % of breast cancers affect men – consult in the following cases:
- The appearance of a mass in the breast or armpit;
- A change in the appearance of the breast;
- A change of form,
- A discharge from the nipple.
Consult the doctor at the first abnormal signs
For testicular cancer, the first signs may be painless swelling, the appearance of a lump, or a change in shape of the testicle. Consulting the doctor at the first signs is essential to optimize the prognosis of cancer. Detected early, these cancers are generally associated with a good prognosis for patients. On the other hand, the later the diagnosis is made, the more advanced the cancer is and the worse the prognosis may become.
To better detect these first signs, it is important to take care of your body and regularly check that everything is fine. Women are particularly encouraged to perform breast self-palpation regularly. By coupling this monitoring with participation in screening strategies, such as mammography every day from the age of 50 for all women, and the correction of risk factors (stopping smoking, healthy and balanced diet, etc.), everyone can contribute to reducing cancer! This unique campaign might give ideas for other original prevention actions.
