The MLS is a relatively young competition. It was born in December 1993, as a condition that the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) imposed on the United States to host the 1994 World Cup.
In its beginnings, the tournament had only 10 teams, but currently it has grown considerably to reach 29 clubs, including not only franchises from the United States, but also from Canada.
