The MLS has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years (Archyde.com)

The MLS is a relatively young competition. It was born in December 1993, as a condition that the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) imposed on the United States to host the 1994 World Cup.

In its beginnings, the tournament had only 10 teams, but currently it has grown considerably to reach 29 clubs, including not only franchises from the United States, but also from Canada.

The growth of the MLS has not only been in terms of clubs, but also in international fame.

In recent years, it has sought to consolidate itself by bringing stars and legends of world soccer, in order to attract attention to its competition, repeating the “recipe” that they applied in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the predecessor of the MLS, when historic players such as Pelé, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and George Best, to mention, joined their ranks.

Thus, the MLS added contemporary stars such as David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Andrea Pirlo, Kaká, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Rafael Márquez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to its teams. And more recently to Javier “El Chicharito” Hernández, Carlos Vela, Gareth Bale, David Villa, not to mention the transfers of Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi.

These types of moves have made MLS an interesting option not only for players looking to rub shoulders with high-level players, but also for soccer fans who want to continue watching their favorite stars.

To date, the Los Angeles Galaxy holds the record for titles, with five MLS Cups, closely followed by DC United, which has won four awards.

Regarding the top scorers in the MLS, there are notable names such as Chris Wondolowski, with 171 goals, Landon Donovan, with 145 goals, Jeff Cunningham, with 134 goals, Jaime Moreno, with 133 goals and Kei Kamara, with 130.

Regarding the players with the most games played in the history of the MLS, figures such as Nick Rimando stand out, with 514 appearances, Kyle Beckerman, with 498 games, Jeff Larentowicz, with 437 games, Kevin Hartman, with 416 games and Chris Wondolowski, with 413 encounters.
