SAN JOHN (AP) — Bermuda meteorologists warned Wednesday that there might be dangerous storm surge and rip currents as Hurricane Nigel moves across the open waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean.

The Category 1 hurricane was located 1,215 kilometers (755 miles) east-northeast of Bermuda. It had maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) and was moving north at 30 km/h (18 mph).

Bermuda has been hit by three storms in the last month, although none have been a direct hit.

“This has been a very long and unforgiving hurricane season,” said Homeland Security Minister Michael Weeks.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Nigel has likely already reached peak intensity and is forecast to begin weakening later Wednesday as it moves toward colder waters.
