The man was arrested Sunday following fleeing from police in Georgia. He is suspected of having faked his death to escape prosecution for the rape of a child.

His plan fell through. After faking his death by drowning in Louisiana, a kayaker was arrested in the state of Georgia in the United States on Sunday, the Saint-Charles Parish County sheriff announced in a press release on social networks.

The man, aged 41, is suspected of pretending to be dead to escape prosecution for the rape of a child. He was due to appear for arraignment on the day of his disappearance. On August 7, his son alerted the authorities: while going kayaking on the Mississippi River, near Hahnville, Louisiana, his father fell overboard and drowned.

But by finding out more regarding the missing person, the authorities cast some doubts on this version. They discovered that the latter was to be prosecuted for “child rape” and “indecent assault of a child” in Brunswick County, North Carolina.

“We immediately began to suspect that this may have been an accidental fake drowning and death in order to evade prosecution in Brunswick County, North Carolina,” the sheriff summarizes in his press release.

He tries to flee on a motorbike, then on foot

Without issuing a search notice so as not to put the man on alert, the police discreetly set out on his trail. Their investigations lead them to discover that the suspect bought two prepaid phones before disappearing, which reinforces their suspicions of a voluntary disappearance. But their research remains at a standstill.

It was only on Sunday, more than a month later, that the investigation experienced a major twist. When they spot a motorcycle without a license plate, police officers on patrol try to stop it. But the driver manages to avoid them and his motorcycle ends up crashing. Surviving the fall, the man fled on foot, but was quickly caught and arrested.

In police custody, while he gives a false name to investigators, it is his fingerprints that speak for him, revealing his identity. “Now is the time to [lui] to face the charges once morest him in North Carolina,” the sheriff concluded in the press release, without giving further details on the facts for which the man was to be tried.

While awaiting a new court hearing, rescheduled for October 3, he was incarcerated in a prison in southern Georgia, according to information from CNN. He has not yet been prosecuted for faking his death and fleeing.
