Revolutionizing Local Mobility: Liège’s Water Buses Promoting Convenient and Eco-Friendly Transportation Options

2023-09-20 06:24:41

The City of Liège is considering an original initiative that might revolutionize local mobility: the creation of “water buses” navigating the Meuse. The main objective behind the approach is threefold: to relieve congestion in the city, diversify transport options and promote smoother, environmentally friendly mobility. Many interesting stops are possible: the Liège-Guillemins station, the Standard de Liège, the P+R under construction of the tram terminals, the Val Benoît site, the Droixhe industrial zone, Outremeuse with its schools and shops, the Boverie park and museum, the Palais des Congrès, the Bavaria site (B3),…
And more generally, the neighboring towns of Seraing and Herstal.

The Meuse, in the heart of Liège, is no stranger to transport. If today it is mainly used for the transport of goods, it must be recognized that previous attempts to exploit the river for tourist purposes, such as river shuttles, have not met with the expected success. Indeed, the latter, despite their charm, have been criticized for their high cost, their low practicability and the limited number of stops.

If the idea of a “water bus” sees the light of day, it will have to be not only affordable, but also practical and integrated into the urban fabric so as to meet the needs of citizens, avoiding the pitfalls of previous initiatives, and emphasizing a user-centered approach.

The City of Liège has decided to launch an investigation. The latter will make it possible to identify the expectations and needs of users.
