For the end of the International Fair, the Caen exhibition center (Calvados) is hosting the first edition of the Japan Manga Wave, from September 22 to 24, 2024. Exhibitions, meetings, cosplay… Many activities are on the program for this dedicated convention to Japanese pop culture.

The French love manga

Manga spirit, are you there? In Caen, definitely! Teenagers and young adults love Japanese comics, as local booksellers can attest.

A phenomenon which has grown considerably throughout the country, to the point that certain elected officials (nationalists) were worried to see that the majority of the budget allocated to the culture pass was used to purchase its little illustrated books.

The French are today the second largest consumers in the world, behind the Japanese, with nearly 50 million copies sold in 2021. Twice as many as the United States, which completes this podium, a country yet five times more populated !

Traditional and contemporary Japan

Anime, gastronomy, cosplay, video games, tattoos… Through these works, Japanese culture is spread throughout the country. An improvement which also leads to the creation of events aimed at fans, such as the Caen Japan Manga Wave, which takes place at the exhibition center, for the end of the International Fair, itself dedicated to Japan.

From September 22 to 24, the organizers invite you to “delve into traditional Japan through a 2000 m2 exhibition” which will transport you to a district of Kyoto, the imperial city and former capital of the country, but also “into contemporary Japan » thanks to a convention centered around “pop culture”.

Cosplay, voice actors, mangakas…

This will be an opportunity to meet specialists in cosplay, a hobby which consists of playing the role of a fictional character by imitating their costume, haircut and makeup. The names Han Jones, Aori, Ellothin and members of the Yumigami association will be present.
