A page has been turned today in Marcinelle. The former home of Marc Dutroux has given way to a garden inaugurated in the presence of the victims’ families. A memorial inaccessible to the public. The house was razed but not the cellar where Julie and Mélissa were held.
The parents of the victims and mainly Gino Russo, Mélissa’s father, wanted to preserve the cellar in which the little girls were held. For him, the file has not yet revealed all its secrets. He remains convinced that avenues have not been exploited. He wants investigators to be able to go back in one day.
The old cistern transformed into a cache has been preserved and covered but by removing the earth, it might appear once more and DNA samples, for example, might be taken there.
Gino Russo is still waiting for the truth. “I think we will go back“, he said. “In 50 years when this whole generation will no longer exist and we will not be afraid of the truth. And don’t be afraid to say that we did a bad job. Maybe we won’t be afraid to say why too. Because I don’t know.”
