British health officials have warned that popular weight loss supplements may be full of deadly toxins, following a young child was poisoned following taking these supplements.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report said that the tablets purchased by the mother of the approximately two-year-old boy were labeled as Mexican “tejocote root,” a plant also known as hawthorn that is marketed for weight loss, according to “The Sun.” .

These supplements are readily available to buy online for detox and fat loss, and although there is not much evidence to confirm the role of hawthorn in weight loss, it is generally considered safe for consumption.

The child, who lives in New Jersey, began experiencing nausea and vomiting shortly following taking the pills, and was taken to the emergency room.

Doctors noticed that the child was suffering from low heart rate, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and other symptoms.

Doctors thought the supplements the child was taking might not actually contain hawthorn, so they contacted the New Jersey Poison Information and Education Service (NJPIES), which helped them determine that the supplements were composed entirely of toxic yellow oleander.

The oleander plant is highly toxic, and all parts of the plant contain substances that are toxic to humans.

High doses of this toxic plant can lead to irregular heartbeat and paralysis of the heart and breathing, which may cause coma or even risk death.

Although the child recovered, the New Jersey Poison Information and Education Service conducted further investigations into the case.

10 samples of weight loss supplements readily available on the market were withdrawn, and 9 of them were found to contain the highly toxic oleander plant.
