We often hear regarding, in the field of natural medicine, ways to temper the pathological state of an organ and restore it. But prevention through lifestyle and/or supplementation should concern us before a problem arises. Example with the prostate.

To make the right prevention choices, it is necessary to understand the needs of the organ you are targeting. We will explore the important prevention factors for a male organ: to the prostate. The main role of this gland located under the bladder is to secrete prostate fluid. With age, the prostate tends, under the influence of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels, to develop a benign hypertrophy, which can lead to urination problems, among other things. This mainly affects the central part of the prostate, hence the compression of the urethra. DHT is the result of the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase on testosterone.

Beware of overdose

The prostate is also an organ in which the zinc concentration is higher than elsewhere. It is also sensitive to oxidative stress (chronic excessive presence of free radicals), and certain antioxidants will be beneficial for the healthy maintenance of this gland, as zinc, selenium, SOD (superoxide dismutase), lycopene, etc.

Be careful, however, if a low daily dosage (15 to 20 mg for zinc for example) is interesting, overdose can conversely increase the risk of prostate cancer (greater than 100 mg for zinc). There are also good gemmotherapy complexes that present no risk while showing great interest in prostate maintenance and the prevention of aging.

The right foods

Priority therefore to taking physiological and varied doses, which is the role of a good diet. If necessary, taking supplements must also respect these criteria of low and physiological dosages. As for meals, here are some foods that deserve a regular presence on your table if you plan to create good conditions for the aging of your prostate (non-exhaustive list, of course).

  • For zinc: veal liver, egg yolk, rye and wheat germ, cashew nuts, broad beans, oysters, brewer’s yeast.
  • For selenium: chickpeas, porcini mushrooms, poultry, Brazil nuts, kohlrabi, wheat germ.
  • To slow down the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, and therefore reduce the level of DHT: apples, red onions, chives, parsley, green beans, strawberries, blueberries.

Under no circumstances can the information and advice offered on the Alternative Santé site replace a consultation or diagnosis made by a doctor or health professional, the only ones able to adequately assess your state of health.
