Postponement of EVRAS Decree in La Louvière Schools Sparks Controversy and Protests

2023-09-19 09:47:32

The City of La Louvière is postponing the implementation of the EVRAS decree in the entity’s schools. As we recall, this decree has imposed, since the start of the school year, 2-hour activities on education in relational, emotional and sexual life, in 6th primary and 4th secondary. A decree which provokes protests. Ranging from demonstrations to burning schools in Charleroi and Liège. Protests fueled in part on social networks, and in particular pushed by an anti-EVRAS disinformation network.

Following these incidents, the socialist alderman for Louviérois education, Françoise Ghiot, decided to delay. As reported by our colleagues at Sudinfo, the latter has decided not to schedule these events in 2023, but rather next January or February. In the meantime, the City wishes to conduct a series of dialogues with parents of students who wish to do so.

The city’s mayor Jacques Gobert, contacted by RTBF, however denies any “postponement” of the event. The mayor speaks more of a calendar problem. “The animations are maintained. However, for the sake of scheduling, these will be given later. We will take care of all these activities, obviously remaining attentive to what is happening outside.”
