Examining the Inadequate Guides of EVRAS Education with Sofie Merckx

Sofie Merckx, leader of the PTB in the federal parliament, was the guest of Bel RTL morning this Tuesday. At Martin Buxant’s microphone, she spoke regarding the relational, emotional and sexual life education courses (EVRAS). If she is in principle favorable to the establishment of these courses, she considers that the guides are not adequate.

“We voted for it,” says Sofie Merckx regarding the EVRAS courses. She specifies: “I am a doctor. I have already had girls in my office who are harassed at school in relation to intimate photos which are sent to classmates. These are worrying situations, it is essential to ‘talk regarding it at school.’ However, the MP is not convinced of the guides that should be used to give these lessons. She believes that they are not suitable: “When you read the guides, you may ask yourself certain questions.”

She continues: “There are concerns that are real. Parents who are worried are not necessarily conspiracy theorists.” Sofie Merckx then suggests “taking the example of La Louvière”: “Before reintroducing the lessons, the alderman will survey the parents and see what we cover at what age.” So put all this on hold? She doesn’t answer the question clearly, but says it’s “important to have a dialogue.”

The guest concludes: “It is important to have a dialogue on the precise content of the courses and we also think that we perhaps need to review or clarify certain things that are in the guides and which can be confusing.” Turning back isn’t an option for her, but “if people aren’t putting their kids in these classes, it’s not a solution.”
