Delhaize Supermarket Chain Offers Bonuses and Support Measures to Franchise Store Workers: 40 Million Euros Allocated

2023-09-19 06:03:00

The Delhaize supermarket chain is offering bonuses to workers who agree to join the staff of franchise stores. The distributor has planned a total amount of 40 million euros for this, the Flemish written press reported on Tuesday.

Delhaize’s new proposal, tabled at the end of last week on the negotiating table, provides for a whole series of support measures for the approximately 9,000 staff members of the 128 stores that the company wishes to franchise. They will receive a bonus of 1,500 euros, supplemented by 125 euros per year worked. With an average seniority of 18 years, this represents an average of 3,750 euros. Added to this is a one-off compensation of 145 euros for the removal of a sectoral bonus.

By means of a bonus of 10,000 euros, Delhaize also wants to encourage its employees who can legally do so to take their early retirement. Some 800 workers might benefit. Currently, it is possible to retire at the age of 60, provided you have accumulated 44 years of career.

The liberal union unanimously rejects the proposal from Delhaize management

Delhaize staff members affiliated with the CGSLB unanimously rejected on Monday the management proposal tabled on Friday on the negotiating table to end the social conflict within the supermarket group. This was indicated on Tuesday by Wilson Wellens, permanent secretary of the liberal union for the sector.

The liberal union was the first to survey its affiliates. We still do not know the position of the socialist (Setca) and Christian (ACV/CNE) trade union organizations, which must also consult their members this week.

The social conflict at Delhaize has lasted six months. In March, the management of the Belgian supermarket chain announced that it wanted to sell off the 128 stores it still managed. The unions reacted with indignation, the independent branches reporting to another joint committee. This means poorer wages and working conditions. Nothing will change for the existing staff, however, assured the management of the distributor.

Last week, she tabled a new proposal on the negotiating table, under the aegis of the facilitator designated by the Minister of Labor Pierre-Yves Dermagne (PS). The document does not change anything regarding the intention to franchise the stores. On the other hand, it offers more guarantees and support measures for the workers concerned. French-speaking union representatives had already reacted negatively on Friday. However, they added that they wanted to consult the staff and let them have the last word.

For the moment, only one result is known: the Liberals therefore voted unanimously once morest the agreement. In theory, however, the signature of a single union is enough to approve the agreement, according to Wilson Wellens, the permanent secretary of the CGSLB
