Its discovery was less than 400 years ago and owes its existence to the first microscopes. The British polymath Robert Hooke was one of the first to see them and gave them their name around 1666: cells – derived from the Latin word cellula for chamber or box. He had discovered the first of these universal basic units of life as cavities in the tissue of bottle cork, ferns and sundews. This made it clear that all complex organisms consist of tiny, self-contained and self-regulating units, which amounted to a revolution in biology and medicine.
