The French Cycling Federation has unveiled the list of riders who will compete in the European Championships, in Drenthe in the Netherlands, from Wednesday to Sunday.
Long reserved for youth categories, the European Cycling Championships have been open to elite riders since 2016, and the 2023 edition is being held in Drenthe, in the Netherlands, from Wednesday to Sunday. France has often won medals in the Elite categories (five), but has never yet won a blue and white jersey with yellow stars. The Federation hopes that this will be the case this year, and it revealed its selection on Monday. As for the women, who have never won a single medal in the Elite European Championships, hopes will rest in particular on Audrey Cordon-Ragot and Juliette Labous, who will compete in the time trial on Wednesday (29.5km) and will be leaders of the French team for the road race on Saturday (131.5km), also with Victoire Berteau and Aude Biannic. The mixed time trial relay will be held on Thursday (38.4km), and the Blues will try to gain a place compared to the last time the event was held, in 2021, and where they finished in foot of the podium.
Who will succeed Jakobsen?
Bruno Armirail and Rémi Cavagna will take part in this mixed relay, then in the men’s time trial on Wednesday (29.5km). In 2020, Cavagna won silver behind Stefan Küng. The Soudal-Quick Step rider will arrive with confidence following winning his first stage race on Sunday, the Tour of Slovakia (which did not include a time trial) in front of…Stefan Küng. The most anticipated event will be Sunday’s road race (199.8km), where the succession of Peter Sagan (2016), Alexander Kristoff (2017), Matteo Trentin (2018), Elia Viviani (2019), Giacomo Nizzolo (2020), Sonny Colbrelli (2021) and Fabio Jakobsen (2022) will be opened. The Blues will be able to count on their best sprinters Arnaud Démare and Christophe Laporte, the classics specialists Benoit Cosnefroy and Florian Sénéchal or even the rollers Bruno Armirail and Rémi Cavagna.
