The EU’s continued support for Ukraine and its path to the EU are at the top of the agenda at the meeting of EU ministers for Europe on Tuesday in Brussels. Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanischyna is expected at a working breakfast. European Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) cannot take part due to illness. It is not yet clear who will represent her. Other topics include asylum policy and the EU budget.

The so-called General Affairs Council serves primarily to prepare the European Council of Heads of State and Government. At the top of their agenda in Brussels on October 26th and 27th, in addition to Ukraine and enlargement, will be EU asylum and migration policy and the EU Commission’s plans for an increased multi-year EU budget.

After the events in Lampedusa, migration is likely to be discussed; However, no conclusions are currently planned. According to Brussels observers, the agreement on an increased EU budget that the Spanish Council Presidency is aiming for in October is still a long way off. Several EU states, including Austria, have taken a position once morest the Commission’s plans.
