Maria Pourchet revisits the myth of Dom Juan in the age of #MeToo
Maria Pourchet has a knack for short titles: “Avancer”, “Champion”, “Feu” and now “Western”, her seventh and final novel published by Stock. Titles that resonate, like his impactful writing. In “Western”, the novelist, also a sociologist and screenwriter, tells the story of Alexis, an actor who must play the title role of Dom Juan and who asks that it be entrusted to a woman. A remarkable feminist gesture… except that the actor is accused of psychological violence once morest one of his young conquests. A bit by chance, he finds refuge with Aurore, a young isolated mother, who falls in love with him. “I wanted to answer a question that I often ask myself: what do we do with men now? […] Today, we really don’t want any more of this big delinquent, Dom Juan. Is right. But can we still love him?”: Maria Pourchet, who reflects on our times crossed by the #MeToo wave, is our guest.
Migration crisis: is there a need for a referendum on immigration?
Both the figures and the images are spectacular. In the space of two days, more than 7,000 exiles landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Considering the European population – around 450 million inhabitants – these arrivals represent only a minority. However, a gulf exists between this statistical reality and the perception we may have of irregular immigration. Unsurprisingly, this makes it a highly flammable political issue in the French political debate. And this reactivates the idea defended by The Republicans and the National Rally: organizing a referendum on immigration. If institutionally, this is not possible, Emmanuel Macron plans to broaden the scope of article 11 of the Constitution, opening the door to a consultation of the French. But should we give the people a voice on such a subject? Shouldn’t immigration policy be decided at European level? We debate it on the 28 Minutes set.
