While officially no new version of the Xbox Series X is in Microsoft’s pipeline, it is certain that the Redmond firm is already working on the next generation of consoles. Documents from the trial between the FTC and Microsoft in the context of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard today clarify the American giant’s plans for the tenth generation of consoles.
The next Xbox planned for 2028
This time it is Axios who was able to get their hands on the documents, revealing that in spring 2022, Microsoft executives planned to launch the next generation in 2028.
A meeting took place, bringing together a dozen senior executives, including Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, Amy Hood, the director of finance and Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox.
We learn that during an exchange, an executive not belonging to the Xbox branch asked the games management team if the next Xbox would deviate from the traditional model of consoles with fixed hardware standards. Anuj Gosalia, vice president of immersive experiences, responded:
One of the things that consoles have been really good at is giving developers a very clear platform goal, and [le kit de développement de jeux] was very good in this regard.
A question was then asked regarding the potential flexibility of the next consoles.
Is the plan for 2028 to keep this model [illisible] or force a Windows-like flexible/capabilities model?
Kevin Gammill, vice president of gaming ecosystems, referred to the experimentation with different Xbox models during the current and previous generations.
We’ve already started this journey with Xbox One and Xbox One X, continuing it in Series S|X. We need to be even more flexible with Gen 10, but also allow creators to take advantage of unique hardware capabilities.
Xbox should therefore continue on the same line during the next generation of consoles, by not offering unique hardware. Regardless, there are still many good years ahead of the Xbox Series X|S.
