Here is the month of September and the announcement of the program for 2023-2024. “We are a cultural center. We cannot imagine a cultural center which only organizes eight days of concerts per year,” insists the director of the association.
In office since September 2021, he put a season on track in September 2022. “The public responded massively, in the capacity that we have. The auditorium seats 300. On average, for paid concerts, we had 250 people, and three were sold out. For the residency outings, there were between 180 and 250 people who came to discover the artists and then chat with them on stage. But even if it hadn’t worked as well, we would have persevered. »
Requiem and creation
For the broadcast component, the Abbaye aux Dames chose keyboards and superlatives as a common thread. Jean-Philippe Collard, on October 6, is “one of the greatest representatives of French piano in the world”. Gary Hoffman, accompanied by David Selig on piano on December 15, is “one of the greatest cellists in the world”. Pierre Hantaï, performing with the il Convito ensemble on February 9, is “a harpsichordist who has left his mark on several generations of music lovers”. Laurent Cabasso, on March 22, is an “exceptional chamber musician”, and Vanessa Wagner, on January 19, “the most deliciously singular of her generation”. There, it’s “Le Monde” which says it. Let’s complete with David Lively and violinist Elsa Grether, on November 17, to “highlight the young generation that is coming up”.
Jean Philippe Collard opens the season on October 6.

The Young Atlantic Orchestra positions itself astride broadcasting and another mission, transmission. The 180 selected musicians have access to six work sessions, with course validations. They will also take the stage on November 28, under the direction of Jean-François Heisser, and on April 6, under the baton of Léo Warynski. That day, their repertoire resonates with a monument, Mozart’s “Unfinished Requiem”, and a work commissioned from Philippe Hersan, as a contemporary response. “In their careers, musicians will be confronted with new creations. It is essential to offer them works of today, still unpublished. What better gift than to commission a work especially for them? »

Varied voices
Support for creation remains placed under a broad theme, “The Voices of the Abbey”. Six projects were selected from 36 candidates, ranging from very old music, the six-voice polyphonies of the Aïgal ensemble, to very modern approaches, such as Vanda which combines the viola da gamba and electro. Each time, exits from residence are subject to free restitution.
During the last edition of Musik Maestro, on May 13, under the canvas of the abbey.
