Austria was represented with two Jugend Innovativ winning projects at the 34th European Union Contest for Young Scientists from September 13th to 17th, 2023 in Brussels.

Brussels/Vienna (OTS) Two current winning projects from Jugend Innovativ were able to compete for Austria at the 34th European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), gain international competition experience and enjoy an exciting stay in Brussels.

The summit of Europe’s best talent in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) will take place from September 13th to 17th, 2023 in Brussels, Belgium. 136 young researchers between the ages of 14 and 20 from 36 countries are taking part in the competition. They present 85 research projects that are evaluated by an international jury of experts. Participants compete for prestigious prizes, including visits to CERN and ESA, as well as cash prizes of up to €7,000.

Teams from Lower Austria (HLUW Yspertal) and Carinthia (HTL Mössingerstraße) are taking part in the contest for Europe’s best young scientists. The Austrian teams qualified for this year’s EU competition through their respective victory in their category (SCIENCE, ENGINEERING II) at the Jugend Innovativ Federal Final 2023.

Hidden Agend: TFA, the danger lurking in our water (Marlies Planegger and Katarina Schmidt)

Two students from HLUW Yspertal carried out trifluracetate (TFA) measurements in surface waters in the Vienna Basin. They kept aquatic plants in artificial nutrient solutions at the same conditions and then added different amounts of sodium trifluoroacetate to them.

Automatic edge grinder (Michael Kotschnig, David Riedl and Johann Markus Wernig) In Klagenfurt, three students from the HTL Mössingerstraße have developed an automatic chicane grinder. Both edges of a ski can be sharpened simultaneously. Two opposing grinding wheels are controlled by small, battery-operated electric motors on a mechanical linkage. Adapted to the sidecut of the ski, the discs are always perfectly aligned on the edges.

EUCYS is a historic competition

It is the third time that the competition has been held in Brussels. The European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) was held here for the first time in 1989, following Jacques Delors, then President of the European Commission, decided to take over a European science fair that a major Dutch electronics company had organized since 1968.

The aim was to promote the ideals of collaboration and exchange by and between young scientists. The competition is an annual showcase for the best academic achievements of European students.

EUCYS gives students the opportunity to compete with the best of their peers at European level. Young scientists also have the opportunity to meet other people with similar skills and interests, as well as some of Europe’s most eminent scientists. The Commission would like to strengthen the efforts of the individual participating countries to attract young people to careers in science and technology.
