A strange fish with arms instead of fins has been discovered in Australia. This fish, which was thought to have disappeared from the earth due to extinction, is being rediscovered following 20 years. Kerry Yare, a woman who was jogging in Tasmania, Australia, discovered this strange fish.
Thinking that it was one of the marine creatures like pufferfish and toadfish, Kerry went to it. It was there that the fish’s strange arms caught Kerry’s attention. This is a spotted handfish that lives on the bottom of the ocean. They walk on the ocean floor using hand-shaped fins. After 20 years ago, they were not found in the search, and the authorities considered that they have become extinct from the Australian coast. At the time, it was estimated that there were only 2000 left in the world. But now that the fish has been found once more, the Australian authorities have corrected this notion.
Spotted handfish are similar to anglerfish. In addition to walking, they also use these hand-like wings to clean and lay their eggs. There are thought to be 14 species of handfish in the world. 7 of these are in Tasmania. One of these is the Spotted Handfish. Spotted handfishes were first listed as Critically Endangered by the International Council for Conservation of Nature. Trawling off the Tasmanian coast is a major threat to the habitat of these fishes.
