ALGIERS – The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni, gave, Sunday, “strict” instructions to “flood” the national market with different legumes in an “urgent” manner and at “fixed” prices at national level, indicates a press release from the ministry.
These instructions were given during a meeting chaired by Mr. Henni, with directors of cereal and legume cooperatives at the national level (52 cooperatives), in the presence of the Secretary General of the National Union of Algerian Peasants (UNPA) and the Director General of the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC), added the same source, noting that the meeting was devoted to the regulation of the final preparations for the plowing-sowing campaign for the 2023-2024 season, as well as to supplying the national market with legumes.
To this end, “the minister gave strict instructions to all directors relating to the need to flood the national market with legumes, urgently, and to work in coordination with the directors of agricultural services, the trade services and the competent services, to supply all economic operators and industrialists, wholesale traders and retail traders, with prices fixed through all points of sale”, according to the press release.
The minister gave these instructions following having “listened to the minister’s presentation on the abundance of legumes to the OAIC, particularly in the context of the exclusivity of the importation of legumes by the OAIC”, according to the ministry which affirmed the availability of “considerable and sufficient quantities of pulses and rice” at the Office.
The meeting was also devoted to the final instructions to be given concerning the plowing-sowing operation as well as the evaluation of the preparations underway on the ground in this area, particularly in the context of “climate change, rising temperatures and the water stress in certain regions of the country,” according to the press release.
The meeting was an opportunity to recall all “the encouraging procedures adopted by the public authorities to achieve the objectives set in terms of cereal production, increase in the cultivated area, improvement in the level of yield per hectare, expansion of irrigated areas and development of this sector in the southern wilayas”, according to the same source.
