It was a tragic end to the evening that struck a family and friends at the start of the weekend.

Romane, aged 24, had spent an evening with friends. They had spent part of the evening at Café Belga, a café on Place Flagey in Ixelles, well known to night owls. The young women decided to return around 1:30 a.m. by scooter.

Romane, who was soon to finish law studies, was not able to go very far. While she was on Avenue de l’Hippodrome, barely a few hundred meters from Place Flagey, she was hit by a car. A witness to the accident began to provide first aid. The emergency services quickly intervened. The Brussels-Ixelles police managed to intercept the motorist who fled following the accident.

Hospitalized at Saint-Pierre hospital in Brussels, Romane, who had just finished an Erasmus stay in Spain, did not survive her injuries. She died on Saturday followingnoon.

The driver, 35, tested positive for alcohol

The driver of the car was subjected to a breathalyzer test. This showed that he had consumed alcohol. Additional tests will have to determine the alcohol level. An accident expert went to the scene of the collision.

The driver, aged 35, was referred to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. He was presented to the investigating judge on duty. He was charged with manslaughter.
