Internship allowances in the Netherlands vary widely. While one student receives 700 euros per month for an internship, another intern receives nothing at all. In 2022, 44 percent of students will not have received an internship allowance.
All students who do an internship should receive compensation, according to student union LSVb and interest group ISO. The latter organization, together with Try de Bond and CNV Jongeren, advocates a mandatory internship allowance.
“Students with a part-time job earn on average more than 500 euros per month,” says ISO chairman Demi Janssen. She would like to see an internship allowance of around that amount. Students who do a full-time internship have little time for a part-time job.
Students can receive compensation from the employer for their internship. This is not legally required in the Netherlands. Employers may determine the amount of any compensation themselves.
“Internships are primarily intended to learn, not to work,” says a spokesperson for the employers’ association AWVN. The association does not agree with a mandatory internship allowance. “What a realistic internship allowance is depends entirely on the internship.”
Wages are rising slightly faster than internship allowance
The internship allowance is therefore not a salary, but a kind of expense allowance. On the other hand, an intern is not allowed to perform the work of a permanent employee. The internship should really be all regarding learning.
Internship allowances rose slightly in line with inflation last year. The average compensation increased by 3 percent in 2022, reports job site Magnet.me. Collective labor agreement wages increased by 3.8 percent that year.
An internship is an important part of a study. Students can learn a lot by working at a company in the field of study.
