The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, wanted to use the cameras from the automaker’s electric cars to spy on the vehicle’s drivers. The information was disclosed in the billionaire’s biography, which was written by journalist Walter Isaacson and published recently.
According to the book, the justification given by Musk for recording the drivers of Tesla cars was to use the images as evidence in accident investigations into the autopilot and autonomous driving features of the brand’s models.
The executive believed that most accidents were caused by bad drivers and wanted to use the videos to prove possible human error while driving. Musk wanted to collect the images without the drivers’ knowledge, according to the biography.
However, other Tesla executives resisted and a privacy notice was included in the idea. The company has not yet used internal images of vehicles to defend itself in lawsuits or investigations related to the cars’ autopilot.
Many Tesla cars have a camera inside to monitor the driver’s level of attention and alert the driver in cases of distraction on the road. The sensor debuted in the Model 3, released in 2017, and then in the S/X, but was not activated until 2021.
Currently, the camera is used to ensure that drivers are still observing the road when performing autonomous driving. Tesla claims to guarantee the privacy of its customers and no internal images have been released so far.
