Travelers Leave Bourdonnette Parking Lot: Court-Ordered Departure in Lausanne

2023-09-17 16:34:28

Travelers present at the Bourdonnette parking lot in Lausanne since February 26 left the premises on Sunday, Keystone-ATS has learned. A month ago, the City of Lausanne obtained a court decision for an irrevocable departure.

Under the leadership of the Cantonal Heritage Chamber, an agreement was signed between the two parties. These travelers from France had committed to leaving the P+R, leaving the premises clean by September 17, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. They continued to pay the sum of 13,500 francs per week as compensation for, in particular, water and electricity.

The approximately 130 caravans “left in dispersed order over several hours on Sunday”, indicated Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand, municipal officer in charge of security and the economy. Some had already left the premises in the previous days, according to him. Cleaning work was still underway late Sunday followingnoon and police were checking whether everything was in order. “The state of affairs is not yet completely final,” he added.

“We are satisfied that the past agreement was respected regarding their departure,” Mr. Hildbrand soberly commented. He was not able to say in which direction the travelers had gone, to France or elsewhere.

Archaeological imperative

The Lausanne Municipality had initiated legal proceedings in order to be able to evict – before August 31 – these approximately 130 caravans installed in the Bourdonnette parking lot without prior authorization. The measure was motivated by imperatives linked to the archaeological excavations planned on the site.

Initially, the City had authorized by agreement a temporary residence, for 15 days in 15 days, in exchange for financial compensation of around twenty francs per vehicle per day. This made it possible to regulate the situation, offset the costs for the community (water, electricity, waste, cleaning) and respond to neighborhood problems.

Then due to the excavations, the Municipality had notified the travelers of its need to regain possession of the land. Despite the municipal desire to reach an agreement on a concerted departure date, the discussions were unsuccessful, with the Travelers refusing to commit to leaving the area.

The Municipality had therefore decided to resort to justice to carry out their eviction, by way of a provisional request, the only legal means available to obtain the evacuation of the parking lot.

As a reminder, a police van was set on fire at the entrance to the Travelers’ camp last April. The investigation was unable to determine the causes of the incident.
