European Union and Italian Prime Minister Address Increasing Migration Crisis in Lampedusa

[Rome Kyodo]On the 17th, Italian Prime Minister Meloni visited the southernmost island of Lampedusa, where the arrival of migrants from Africa and other countries is rapidly increasing, together with European Union (EU) European Commission President von der Leyen. Meloni told a press conference that the rapid increase in migrants “put the future of Europe at stake” and called for further action from the EU.

Von der Leyen presented a 10-point action plan for support. He called for encouraging other member states to accept migrants and for EU institutions to strengthen surveillance from the sea and air.

Italy has seen a rapid increase in immigration from Africa and the Middle East since the beginning of this year. According to the Ministry of Interior, as of the 15th of this month, 127,000 people had arrived by sea, regarding twice as many as during the same period last year.
