Flood Devastates Derna: Libyan Red Crescent Denies Death Toll of 11,300 – Official Report

A spokesman for the Libyan Red Crescent denied on Sunday that the death toll from the floods that struck the city of Derna in the east of the country had reached 11,300 people, according to what the United Nations announced on Saturday, citing the association.

Spokesman Tawfiq Shukri told Agence France-Presse, “We, to be honest, are surprised that our name has been included in such statistics even though we did not declare these numbers.”

He considered that it “confuses the situation, especially for the families of missing people.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had reported that the toll from the floods had risen to 11,300 dead and 10,100 missing, and attributed these numbers to the Libyan Red Crescent.

On Sunday, the official Libyan News Agency said that the team assigned by the National Unity Government to survey the damage in the city of Derna estimated the total number of buildings damaged by torrents and floods at regarding 1,500 out of a total of 6,142 buildings in the city.

The team explained in preliminary statistics that the number of completely destroyed buildings amounted to 891 buildings, 211 partially, and regarding 398 buildings were submerged in mud. The total area of ​​the area inundated by torrents and floods in Derna is estimated at six square kilometers.

A week following the floods that swept through the city of Derna on the coast of eastern Libya, Libyan ambulance services, with the support of foreign teams, continue to search for thousands of dead and missing people as a result of the disaster.
