Drinking a cup of coffee, listening to music, are all activities that would boost the capabilities of our brain.
To reach these conclusions, researchers at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering used a brain monitoring toolMINDWATCH, which made it possible to observe the brain’s reaction to daily stimuli.
A study carried out using monitoring tools
The different participants in the study were subjected to several cognitive tests whose action on the brain was recorded using a skin monitoring bracelet and a brain monitoring headband.
Thus, data was recorded by both tools while participants listened to music, drank coffee or smelled perfumes they liked. Other data were noted in the absence of these stimuli.
Drink coffee, listen to music… It’s good for your brain!
From the data collected, the researchers were able to observe that music and coffee participated in the brain awakening of the volunteers. “ These activities stimulated “beta band” brain wave activity, which is linked to optimal cognitive performance. Fragrances had a slight positive, but these results require further research,” specifies the press release published following the study.
Rose Faghih, associate professor of biomedical engineering at NYU Tandon who developed MINDWATCH, was pleased with the results: “Right now, MINDWATCH is still under development, but our end goal is that it contributes to technology that might allow any person to monitor their own cognitive brain activity in real time, by detecting moments of acute stress or cognitive disengagement, for example. At these times, MINDWATCH might “nudge” a person toward simple, safe interventions – perhaps listening to music – so that they can put themselves in a brain state in which they feel better and perform work or school tasks more successfully. »
