A speakeasy, which includes armchairs, umbrellas and artificial turf, has been erected in the middle of a sidewalk at the corner of 23rd Street and Champa Street.

“We heard there was an open bar, alcohol sales and things like that,” Denver Police Patrol Division Chief Aaron Sanchez said in an interview with CBS Colorado.

Authorities began monitoring this situation following receiving several calls from citizens complaining that the encampment was blocking the sidewalk and forcing pedestrians to walk in the street.

When they arrived, the police found that numerous empty bottles were on the site.

Witnesses also reported that tents near the speakeasy are rented for prostitutes to meet clients.

The leader of the community organization Step Denver, Meghan Shay, told CBS that an encampment that would provide alcohol to the homeless might only exacerbate the problem of homelessness.
