Solidarity. The European Union (EU) announced (August 29) that it had granted aid of 350,000 euros to combat the Mpox (monkeypox or monkey pox) epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Congolese health authorities report nearly 9,000 cases of Mpox in the country, and 500 deaths this year, indicates the EU delegation in the DRC in a press release, specifying that the province of Maniema (east of the country) is the most affected. The spreading epidemic has reached the capital Kinshasa where “two patients were confirmed and treated last week,” she adds. The situation led the EU to “intensify its support and extend it to three new health zones in Maniema, through the strengthening of response capacities, in particular through surveillance, community awareness, diagnostics and treatment. The 350,000 euros from the European Union are intended for the NGO Alima, a medical humanitarian organization present in the country.
