The Great Cheese Price Divide: Exposing the Shocking Disparity between France and Belgium

It’s stronger than Roquefort! The price difference between cheeses in Belgium and France is reaching new heights. Let’s take Roquefort, precisely. It costs €1.85 per 100g tray at our neighbors (Leclerc) while the same product is sold at €5.99 at Carrefour. More than three times more expensive in Belgium. Rising raw material and energy costs have a positive impact. Just like the salary gap that is attributed to the automatic salary indexation system in Belgium. A justification that no longer really holds water if we are to believe the latest assessment by the Central Economic Council (CCE), which reveals that the wage gap between Belgium and neighboring countries is now around 1. 7%. Just a year ago, the CEE estimated it at 4.6% and even 6%. Which means that wages are increasing more quickly among our neighbors, despite the automatic wage indexation mechanism in Belgium. There remains the negotiating power of French brands, more important than that of the Belgians, of course, but that does not justify everything.

Your favorite cheeses have never been so expensive: +50% in one year and it’s “totally unjustified” (COMPARATIVE)

Out of our entire basket, we only found one product cheaper in Belgium, private label Roquefort. It is also surprising to note that between the national brand and the distributor brand, there is very little difference in price in France. On the other hand, in Belgium, the gap is dizzying (€1.89 in private label versus €5.99 for Roquefort Société). A difference that benefits either the manufacturer or the distributor… or even both. In any case, the consumer does not pay the right price.

Upon analysis, we also see that the price differences between private label products on one side of the border and the other remain rather reasonable, of the order of 18 to 20% on average. On the other hand, between national brand products, the difference is incomprehensible, since many products are two to three times cheaper at Leclerc compared to Carrefour…
