37 days before the primary election, in which the unitary candidate of the Venezuelan opposition will be chosen, who will face the current president Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 presidential elections, there are still certain doubts regarding the October 22 process.

In an interview with FIRSTpolitical scientist Luis Rendueles asserts that said mechanism is a challenge for the government, in addition to being a citizen exercise and challenge.

He states that the biggest challenge at the moment is that many people do not know that there is primary school.

“Many do not know what a primary is; They don’t know what to choose; They do not know what mechanism will be used for election; That is to say, there is a group of the population that today is disconnected from said process,” indicates the political scientist.

He regrets that the primary process is only a conversation between political parties, business circles and elites.

The challenge, a few days before the election, is for citizens to know that there is indeed a process that is going to take place, he insists.

The obstacles you have faced

In his opinion, the ruling party has been in charge of placing several obstacles to the process, promoting an agenda of some sectors of the opposition that do not want there to be a primary.

That is, those political factors that see that consensus favors them delegitimize the primary and do not see it as an option for real change for the people.

However, he assures that citizens are convinced to elect his leadership.

“Without a doubt, Chavismo will continue to place obstacles, they will do everything in their power to prevent the process from taking place. If it is done, let it be very complicated, let it be a tainted process; The government’s agenda is going to bet on that,” says Rendueles.

On the other hand, he comments on the investigation case being carried out by the Domestic Policy Commission of the National Assembly, on the origin of the resources for carrying out the primary.

For him, it is another obstacle imposed by the ruling party, to continue discouraging citizens from going out to participate and vote.

The most important thing is that people go out to vote and participate to legitimize the process.

“The more people participate, the better the opportunity will be to sell and communicate the process, which will allow amplifying or exposing the benefits of a strategy or a political decision,”

In the event that there is a bad exercise, not even the best communication will be able to save them. If there is a good exercise, the political scientist insists that communication can serve to amplify and mark a very clear message that helps people believe in politics and the opposition once more.

The scenario of the disabled

Rendueles emphasizes that there is a lot of uncertainty with disqualified candidates. In his opinion, political maturity must be placed above any personal aspiration.

“Political change in Venezuela must be above any ideology, any party or any ego,” he says.

In that sense, he considers that a series of meetings should take place between the candidates who will participate in the primary and agree on a succession plan, in case the winner is one of those disqualified.

“The candidate who is disqualified will not be able to win the election and will not be able to assume the role as opposition leader and presidential candidate once morest Maduro in 2024,” underlines political scientist Rendueles.

Strong candidates to win the primary

For him, there are two strong candidates to win the primary on October 22, the first is Henrique Capriles Radonski.

“He is a well-known candidate, who has high rejection numbers, but very well-known; because he has been a deputy, mayor, governor and twice a presidential candidate,” he emphasizes.

Now, the standard bearer of Primero Justicia, has the support of a party that has great machinery such as Un Nuevo Tiempo, being a great advantage for Capriles.

The other option to win the primary is the leader of Vente Venezuela, María Corina Machado. Rendueles sees that she has distanced herself very well from the so-called G-4 and traditional leaderships.

Which has shown her as a more radical opponent, “who is convincing a large part of the population and the opposition that they are disappointed in politics.”

The political scientist asserts that Machado represents something different and another option different from what already exists.

He highlights that his speech has been very coherent over time, which is allowing him to win many spontaneous votes.

“What we call opinion voting, which is found in the media, in unions, in sectors (…) the phenomenon of María Corina is now escalating in the middle and lower class,” he points out.

Rendueles maintains that despite having a lot of machinery and without a solid party, a candidate who represents change can give a great victory.

A few days before the primary, the political scientist sees the panorama as a way for citizens to choose, becoming an escape valve for people to express their rejection of opposition leaders in whom they no longer believe.

In addition to choosing the leadership that Venezuelans want to represent them, “in that sense I think the primary is a very valuable exercise,” he concludes.
