It was TIME Magazine which revealed the information, a few days following the revelation of letters that the actor had written to help Masterson in his trial, where he was found guilty of having sexually assaulted two women .
Kutcher is leaving Thorn, the organization fighting child sexual abuse that he co-founded in 2009 with his then-wife, Demi Moore. His wife Mila Kunis, who served as an observer on the foundation’s board of directors, has decided to step down as well. She also showed her support for the actor in another letter.
“Victims of sexual abuse have historically been silenced and the morality statement I submitted is another painful example of second-guessing victims who have the courage to share their experiences,” Kutcher wrote in a letter addressed on September 14 to the board of directors of Thorn, which was communicated exclusively to TIME Magazine.
“After several days of listening, personal reflection, learning and conversations with survivors [de violence sexuelle], employees and officers of Thorn, my wife and I decided that the responsible thing to do was to resign from my position as chairman of the board,” he added. “I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract us from our efforts and the children we help.”
The actor also apologized to all victims of sexual abuse.
Kutcher, Kunis and several other former actors That ’70s Show are among the figures who wrote letters of support to Masterson.
