PIPA Prize announces winners by popular vote

A beacon in the Brazilian contemporary art scene, the Pipa Prize revealed this week the winners of its Online Category

In its fourteenth edition, the Pipa Prize continues to reaffirm its democratic and decentralized proposal. Through two rounds of online and open voting, the artist André Mendes and the collective Retratistas do Morro were awarded the prize of 5 thousand reais.

Among the 70 nominated artists, Alice Lara, André Mendes, Bárbara Macedo, Bruna Alcantara, Daiara Tukano, Danielle Noronha, Edgar Kanaykõ second phase which then revealed the two artists most voted by the public.

O Minas Gerais collective Retratista do Morro took first place. Since 2015, they have been dedicated to preserving Brazil’s cultural heritage and enriching the understanding of the history of images in the country. Focused on rescuing the visual narrative of traditional portrait artists who documented experiences in Brazilian communities and favelas, the collective carries out detailed mapping, identification, cataloging and restoration of photographic collections. Focusing on the collections of João Mendes and Afonso Pimenta, the collective Retratistas do Morro is an initiative led by artist Guilherme Cunha and made up of members such as cultural producer Kelly Cristina, photographers João Mendes and Afonso Pimenta, and Dona Ana Martins.

Em second place is André Mendes, one of the artists present on the Artsoul marketplace. The artist was born in Curitiba in 1979 and lives and works in the same city. He is a multifaceted artist whose research and production encompass the universe of drawing, painting, sculpture, installations and spatial interventions. In addition to being a master at creating murals, Mendes also stands out as an art educator, working in the educational sector of some of his exhibitions.

André Mendes is an exponent of contemporary production, revealing the materiality of color, as well as its organicity, he is not restricted to any space, allowing his works to occupy architecture. With this result, the PIPA Online Award, for another year, highlights the importance of mobilizing the public in recognizing the Brazilian artistic scene and promoting contemporary productions.
