Mitsubishi Estate has been selected as the project owner for the theme park concept that has been progressing on the site of the former U.S. military Kamiseya communications facility (in Seya Ward and Asahi Ward, Yokohama City), with plans to open around 2031. In order to increase convenience for the expected 12 million visitors per year, the city is working to improve transportation access, which is positioned as an issue.

Mitsubishi Estate was a partner in the planning process for the theme park by the Town Development Council, which is made up of approximately 250 landowners. He was the only person to raise his hand in the city’s open call for business operators, which began in February of this year.

The theme park will occupy approximately 700,000 square meters of the former site, which is in the “tourist and bustling area.” Considering that the International Horticultural Exhibition “GREEN x EXPO 2027” will be held in some areas in 2027, Mitsubishi Estate is proposing to build commercial facilities in harmony with nature at the venue.

In order to smoothly accommodate the large number of visitors, including the horticultural expo, the city will begin constructing surrounding roads from next fiscal year as a countermeasure once morest traffic congestion. At the City Council Standing Committee meeting held on the 14th, the plan was to partially elevate Loop Route 4, which runs north-south on the site, and create a three-dimensional structure at the intersection with Hachioji Kaido. Loop Route 4 is scheduled to be widened to two lanes in each direction. At the same time, we will continue to consider new transportation systems. Mitsubishi Estate is proposing to create a bustling area by gathering restaurants and other facilities in the station front zone, with a view to making it a reality. (Makka Kamiya)
