Understanding Earthquakes in Riyadh: Causes and Predictions

Al-Marsad newspaper: The President of the Saudi Society for Geosciences, Dr. Abdullah Al-Omari, responded to a question regarding: Will an earthquake occur in Riyadh?

Every day in tremors

Al-Omari said, during an interview on “Eight” Radio: “Every two days there are tremors, especially near the Wadi Beish Dam, the largest dam in the Kingdom.”

He added: “There are tremors through “water”, if it withdraws in huge quantities, or goes to the East and withdraws oil in huge quantities, the layers below are disturbed and a collapse occurs and is recorded in the form of tremors, registering at 3 degrees.”

Dams

He continued: “Dams, as much as they have positives, have negatives, because the pressure of water is heavy, and if it enters the rocks, it begins to put pressure on the cracks, and the ground begins to shake and shake in the form of tremors, reaching 4 and a half degrees, and we can call it an earthquake.”

He pointed out: “We sometimes reach 4 or 5 degrees following constructing the dam, where its center is ‘underneath the dam area’ because the weight of the water inside the dam creates terrible pressure, so it must be emptied.”

rationing

He concluded: “In other words, there must be a process of rationing, because if the dam is full, it must be emptied to relieve the pressure, and if you pay attention to that, the “water” presses on the gaps in any way under it, and the weight of the earth is underneath and it weakens, and if it weakens, it moves with sati and records. Tremors reaching magnitude 4.
