AAA. It might be a short cry of emotion for the beautiful iPhones 15 Pro that didn’t cost two kidneys, but just one — which we’re already used to. Or would it mean, perhaps, a spent lithium stick battery, reminding me how depressed and worn out my iPhone 14 Pro’s battery is? Neither.
The term in question, also called “Triple-A”, is the highest classification in the games industry, typically applied to high-quality productions with large budgets for development and marketing. These are those titles that you expect at least a nomination for a “Game of the Year” award. What if I told you that games of this level will come to iPhones?
Among the new features of the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max is the ability to play AAA games. During the launch event for Apple’s new iTrecos, some titles have already been announced for this year, such as Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake e Death Stranding. Assassin’s Creed Mirage was also announced at Apple’s event for iPhones — it will even be released for consoles and PC this next month, but will only reach iOS in the first half of 2024.
It was also announced that purchases of these titles will be universal. In other words, purchasing the game will give you the possibility of enjoying it on your iPhone, Mac and iPad. With the exception of the exclusive versions for the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max, which will only run on iPads/Macs with Apple Silicon — that is, M1 chip or higher. Not bad, huh?!
It’s good to remember: all these games will not be in the cloud, but rather native on the cell phone, without the need to convert to a lower quality or format. I have no doubt that this year’s top-of-the-line iPhones will perform excellently in games. The A17 Pro chip, now at 3 nanometers and comes with 6 GPU coresGraphics processing unitor graphics processing unit.”>1which promises to be 20% faster and more energy efficient.
There is also something new, for the first time in an iPhone: the chip has Ray Tracing hardware accelerated. It is a technology that renders shadows, water, lighting and effects in a more realistic way, with textures, visual fidelity and even consuming less energy, something that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have. In fact, it will be interesting to see these new features in existing games that require more cell phone power, such as Genshin Impact, Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty Mobile.
If we think that only Macs, PCs and consoles would run a AAA scale game, it’s admirable to see how far iPhone hardware has come. Still, some points leave me thinking: battery health, the temperature that might perhaps fry an egg and gameplay on a small screen. What will the cost of this be in the long term?
Most games already on consoles (or computers) that have been ported to cell phones have an interface adapted for touch. The late Fortnite on the iPhone, for example, had a slightly different layout than the PlayStation version, but was still easily playable — even though I never managed to win a game, but that’s another story.
It’s good to remember that you can connect PlayStation and Xbox controllers to iPhones in order to improve gameplay, if you don’t feel able to entertain yourself with something for a longer period of time just by touching the screen. There are also controls that easily attach to the iPhone, such as Backbone One, which has entrada Lightning and even USB-C model for the new iPhones.
Apple has been increasingly using its platform for games. Apple Arcade even gave me a little hope when it was launched, but to this day I don’t think it’s getting the publicity it deserves — and we don’t even know if it’s yielding anything for Apple. But it’s interesting to see big partners like Capcom and Ubisoft bringing high-quality AAA games to mobile devices. I’m pretty excited!
Tim Cook reinforced that he intends to bring more games of this same scale to the iPhone, but we can only wait. And you, how do you see the future of games for mobile devices? I only have one thing to say…
AAA! This, yes, was a short cry of excitement and anticipation for what is to come! ????
