The latest weekly report from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Public Health France indicates that 705 patients consulted a general practitioner “for dengue syndrome” between September 4 and 10, 2023 in Martinique (compared to 770 patients the week before). Despite this slight decline, the epidemic is still ongoing and “concerns the whole island”.
Over the past two weeks, clinically suggestive cases have been reported in 17 municipalities in Martinique. The towns reporting the highest incidences are Trois-Ilets, Le Diamant, Les Anses-d’Arlets, Le Marin and Saint-Pierre (…). The DENV-2 serotype circulates exclusively in Martinique.
The “classic” form manifests itself as a high fever with a sudden onset. It is often accompanied by chills, headaches, retro-orbital pain, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle pain and, inconsistently, a rash around the 5th day of symptoms. The evolution is most often favorable following a few days.
Severe form (or severe dengue) is characterized by an increase in vascular permeability which can lead to shock and hemorrhages which can be life-threatening.

The alarm signs appear following 2 to 7 days and the temperature returns to normal (thermal defervescence) in the case of the severe form. Clinical vigilance should be maximum around the 4th day. However, “Treatment of dengue fever is symptomatic. There is no specific antiviral treatment.”
Since the start of 2023, health authorities estimate that “5,670 patients consulted primary care for dengue syndrome” In Martinique. There have been 3,790 of them since the start of the epidemic (in the week of July 24).
