It is the anniversary of Amini’s death and the beginning of the mass protests in Iran

Saturday marks the first anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Iranian Mahsa Amini and with it the start of mass protests in the country. The young Kurdish woman died on September 16, 2022 following being arrested by the moral police in Tehran. She was arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly. No memorial events have been announced for Saturday. The Iranian government has warned once morest protests on the anniversary of Amini’s death.

Residents of Tehran reported a larger police presence. Amini’s death sparked months of demonstrations across the country under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.” According to non-governmental organizations, hundreds of people were killed, including security forces. Seven men were executed.
