The commission (producers, directors, exporters, etc.) responsible for selecting the film which will represent France in the race for the Oscar (March 10, 2024) for best international film has just revealed the selected films.

The five films in the running

We find there the last Palme d’Or, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, but also Goutte d’or by Clément Cogitore, the Passion of Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung, the Animal Kingdom by Thomas Cailley, and on the paths black by Denis Imbert.

A film released in 2023, with, notably, Jean Dujardin in the cast. The latter came to Aurillac to present it in preview. An actor who was delighted to be in Aurillac.

It was an opportunity to recall memories of filming, during these 5 days spent in Cantal. By evoking in particular this “middle mountain which allows all possibilities”. To remember this special daylight in the early morning. An actor who recalled his love of walking, of finding himself “at times alone. It’s a film that made me feel good.”

The film was shot, in part, in Cantal (in 2021).

Story of the film

Following an accidental fall of around ten meters, Sylvain Tesson was plunged into an artificial coma. He comes back to life following a week. There, he spends days and days thinking, doing personal introspection. In the fall of 2015, he embarked on a sort of “introspective road trip” through rural France.

A journey which begins in the south and which takes it through the “black paths”, the smallest paths listed on IGN maps, to the tip of Normandy. And with a passage in Cantal, notably in the regions of Plomb du Cantal.

And Denis Imbert offers a “variation” of Sylvain Tesson’s story, with this feature film.

Many stages

This September 21, 2023, the commission will meet to audition the producers and international sellers of each pre-selected film. Subsequently, she will choose the film that will represent France in the Oscar race.

Around fifteen foreign films will then be included in a shortlist which will be revealed on December 21, 2023 by the Academy of Oscars, and five of them will be nominated to win the Oscar. This announcement will take place in January 2024.
