By signing with Xiaomi, Huawei continues to benefit from its patents

Huawei, which holds one of the largest patent portfolios in the world, is continuing its offensive to best monetize these assets. This Wednesday, this flagship of Chinese tech announced that it had reached an agreement with its rival Xiaomi in smartphones. More precisely, it is a global cross-licensing agreement, which covers communication technologies, and in particular 5G.

With this agreement, Huawei and Xiaomi put an end to an old conflict. Last March, Huawei had, according to several Chinese media, sued its competitor for alleged infringement of four registered patents. These included wireless communications, smartphone photography, and screen lock technology.

An agreement with Ericsson

Huawei, which has more than 100,000 researchers and invests around a quarter of its turnover in research and development each year, has for years been working hard to share its patents with as many manufacturers as possible. And, of course, profit from it. At the end of August, the Shenzhen group even signed an agreement with its great rival, the Swedish telecoms equipment manufacturer Ericsson, to reciprocally use their technologies. This announcement, incidentally, constituted a snub to the United States. Washington is sparing no effort to encourage the Old Continent to cut ties with Huawei, accused by the White House of spying on behalf of Beijing.

Huawei claims to have concluded nearly 200 bilateral patent licensing agreements to date. The group cites in particular its competitors Samsung, Oppo, or even leading automobile manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Subaru and Renault. These activities are proving profitable: Huawei claims to have made $560 million from its various licenses last year.
