Rives Ardentes: Connecting Liège with a New Eco-District and Stunning Footbridge

If all eyes of Liège residents are today on the tram site, other excavators are moving forward (well) along the banks of the Meuse, between Droixhe and Coronmeuse precisely. Here in fact, in the shade of the plane trees of Astrid Park, the Rives Ardentes eco-district project is now doing more than emerging from the ground, it is emerging at (very) high speed. Quicker than forecasts to hear the leaders of the Neo Legia Consortium, on the job, which is no easy feat in the construction sector (read below).

And this Friday, September 15, there were lots of people on the banks of the Meuse, for the inauguration of a new cycle and pedestrian bridge. Named Passerelle des Reflets, it is the first of a duo connecting the Coronmeuse district to Astrid park and the Rives Ardentes eco-district. Overlooking the dock and the future port of “bis” yachts, it not only opens the passage to Astrid Park to thousands of Liégeois who live in the Saint-Léonard district but it is also the first completed “stone” of a whole new district in Liège. Willy Demeyer, mayor, was fully aware of this and did not hide his enthusiasm this Friday…

“An extraordinary effect”

“With Rives Ardentes we are tearing down walls and building bridges,” he commented, all smiles facing the Passerelle des Reflets. “And this work is a concrete act, both for the City and for its inhabitants.” Because an obvious echo was made of this other footbridge, La Belle Liégeoise, which since 2016 has linked the Guillemins district to the Boverie park, “a work which has had an extraordinary effect for this district, in terms of attractiveness and accessibility ”, once more underlined the mayor.

The Passerelle des Reflets is therefore more than a new “bridge” for the City of Liège, which now has around thirty footbridges, including 12 above the water. The Alderwoman for Urban Planning Christine Defraigne did not fail, either, to underline this “link” woven “between our historic districts of Bressoux and Saint-Léonard with this new district where green spaces represent 83% of the site ”. A footbridge which, in his eyes, “removes all obstacles to access this magnificent site and which makes our river more present for the people of Liége, the Meuse, the true backbone of the city”.

Accessible to people with reduced mobility, the new structure measures 57 meters long, weighs around 110 tonnes and is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), for an amount of around 2 million euros as part of the urban redevelopment. Starting from the Passerelle des Reflets, there will be walks and new green spaces in and around Astrid Park.
