There is a lot of misunderstanding at the moment in a home in Pecq, in Hainaut. This summer, two caregivers shared, on social networks, in a private discussion group, photos of elderly people who appear in degrading situations. These caregivers had been temporarily sidelined, but ultimately, they can return to the nursing home.

A resident on the floor, following falling from his wheelchair, a lady on the ground and a man at the end of her bed in a degrading position… These humiliating photos were shared by two staff members in a discussion group Facebook several weeks ago. A behavior strongly condemned by the director of the rest home.

“Obviously, these are photos that we wish we would never see. We always imagine our parents, or our grandparents being in these photos. I think everyone has a human reaction when seeing that… C “It’s a bit of indignation and we don’t understand”reacts Julie Opbrouck, executive assistant in the Home General Le Maire rest home in Hérinnes (Pecq). “For me, it’s mistreatment. Because it’s not helping someone and thinking regarding taking a photo before acting. I can’t imagine…”she continues.

A body has decided not to make strong decisions

The facts were revealed at the beginning of July. The two caregivers were initially suspended from their duties. This week, the city’s Public Center for Social Action (CPAS) finally decided not to sanction them. “Today, these caregivers are reinstated since we potentially had a body which, despite the recommendations, decided not to make strong decisions”explains Rémi Cougnet, president of the CPAS de Pecq.

So the facts are not considered serious? “We agree… To my great regret”replies the president of the CPAS de Pecq.

A meeting between residents, families and staff is planned

A residents’ council is planned for next week. It will allow staff, residents and their families to express themselves. The AVIQ, the regulatory body for nursing homes, demands the greatest transparency in the future. She invites the home to contact associations fighting once morest the mistreatment of our elders.
