Emergency SOS via satellite is activated incorrectly while walking

Among the many cases in which the Emergency SOS via satellite contributes to saving people in trouble, there are also cases of false alarms involving the feature present in iPhones from line 14 onwards — like one that recently happened to the website’s founder GeekWire, John Cookus United States.

During his annual walk in the Dinosaur National Monument, he ended up (accidentally) activating the iPhones’ satellite communication feature — apparently when trying to turn off the device. Believing that the smartphone was turned off, he continued his journey, but little did he imagine what was to come.

Some time later, according to published story GeekWire, Cook began receiving constant messages from emergency services questioning him regarding an alleged accident. Considering the messages to be quite generic, he ignored them and simply turned off his iPhone.

But the increasing movement of search and rescue officers around the area and, believe me, even a helicopter flying over the region, made him pick up the device once more and, consequently, realize that he had simply contacted the emergency services.

He claims he does not know how this happened until now, as he does not remember any sound alert on the device indicating a distress call — Apple sends them whenever the feature is being activated, to allow users to deactivate it if it is a problem. a mistake.

Although curious, Cook’s case seems rare. Local authorities even said that they did not observe a significant increase in the number of false alarms with the arrival of the iPhone 14 — the first to have this feature.
