During the meeting, Her Excellency Mira Al Suwaidi stressed the strategic relations between the United Arab Emirates and the European Union, and that the UAE is a reliable strategic partner for most of the Union’s countries, noting the importance of strengthening parliamentary cooperation relations between the Federal National Council and the European Union, through continuing to hold bilateral meetings and exchange Experiences in the interest of both sides in light of the major developments and challenges the world is witnessing.
Al Suwaidi pointed out that the volume of non-oil foreign trade between the United Arab Emirates and the European Union reached $52 billion in 2022, recording significant increases over the previous years, and that the UAE is the Union’s first partner in the region, and the European Union is the Emirates’ second partner. Her Excellency Mira Al Suwaidi also reviewed the UAE’s efforts in investments in hydrogen, carbon neutrality, and in the field of renewable energy, noting that the size of the UAE’s investments in renewable energy is more than $100 billion, and the UAE’s announcement of its investment of $4.5 billion in the African continent, in addition to The UAE is hosting the twenty-eighth session of the COP28 conference this year, expressing its aspiration for cooperation in COP28 with the European side.

Her Excellency explained that the United Arab Emirates, through its presidency of COP 28, is focusing on five main goals:

Firstly, mitigation, by providing concrete solutions to ensure that the 1.5 degree Celsius goal is met, secondly, adaptation, by creating conditions that enable the global goal of adaptation to be achieved, thirdly, losses and damages, by realizing the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, fourthly, financing and the importance of most countries fulfilling their financial obligations, fifthly, innovation. Working with everyone to ensure their contributions to innovative solutions.
It was noted that the Federal National Council, in cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, is in the process of hosting the parliamentary meeting accompanying CPP 28, and the National Council has undertaken initiatives in the field of transforming Parliament into a greener Parliament, and they explained that the next conference will highlight the importance of involving women and youth in the process of combating climate change.

The meeting stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation and ways to enhance and develop it in all fields such as culture, technology, food security, economic, tourism and trade, and the aspiration of the UAE and the Federal National Council to strengthen this strategic relationship, to confront various global challenges, and continuous cooperation to serve in building promising future partnerships with the side. She stressed the importance of joint cooperation in supporting investment in renewable energy, especially in developing countries, and that many EU countries have joint investments with the Emirates in the fields of clean energy and hydrogen, stressing their full support for the UAE’s hosting of the Cop28 conference, and discussing ways of bilateral cooperation between the two sides.
