President Alberto Fernández Attends G77+China Summit in Cuba: Strengthening Unity and Addressing Global Challenges

After being present at the G20 summit in India, President Alberto Fernández arrived in Havana, Cuba, on Thursday night to participate in the G77+China Summit, a bloc that brings together most of the countries in the process of development of the southern hemisphere.

Fernández landed at the José Martí airport around 11:50 p.m. (Argentina time), along with his delegation made up of Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero; the Secretary General of the Presidency, Julio Vitobello; the presidential spokesperson, Gabriela Cerruti; and the ambassador of Argentina to the United States, Jorge Argüello.

The Group of 77+China will meet this Friday and Saturday under the theme “The current remains of development: role of science, technology and innovation.” In this way, the president’s agenda will begin on the morning of September 15 with the opening ceremony of the meeting and, then, he will participate in plenary debates of the forum made up of the leaders of the member countries, which together represent 80 percent of the world population.

In the evening, Fernández will attend the dinner offered by the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, at the Palace of the Revolution. The summit will end on Saturday with a new session of debates and the presentation of the official declaration, as specified by the Presidency through a statement.

“The occasion should serve to strengthen our unity and decide on collective and practical actions to effectively confront contemporary challenges,” said Díaz-Canel in a video broadcast on the social network Twitter when making the official call. According to the Cuban leader, the choice of the topic for this meeting responds to the fact that scientific progress is “inaccessible to a large part of humanity.”

Along these lines, according to information from Télam, the leaders of the member countries hope that the final text calls for a reform of the global financial architecture, the establishment of a new economic order, as well as greater South-South cooperation. South in science, technology and innovation. In that sense, they also hope that the document emphasizes the importance of the contribution of industrialized countries to combat climate change, as well as referring to the elimination of unilateral coercive measures, points that the Government raised in different international meetings.

The G-77 was created in 1964 within the Non-Aligned Movement following the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in Geneva, Switzerland. Although the original number is maintained for historical reasons, it currently includes 134 countries from America, Africa and Asia, and has external collaboration from China. Among the leaders who will be present are the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, and Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia.

After his participation in this meeting, Fernández will travel to New York to be present at the United Nations (UN) Assembly, which will be his last international conclave before the end of his mandate. On this occasion, the President will reiterate Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, while it is expected that he will call for overcoming social inequalities around the world, as well as vindicate multilateral organizations in relation to the international financial architecture. .

A week before arriving in Cuba, Fernández participated in the G20 Summit in India. During his speech, he celebrated the incorporation of the African Union and assured: “I hope that in the future the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which faces problems similar to those faced by Africa, can join this forum.” Some time later, he targeted the architecture of the global financial system and criticized the economic asymmetries between nations.
