Humanity: enemy and savior of its heritage

By Nicolas Teyssandier, prehistorian at the CNRS

Archaeological heritage is vulnerable and the dangers weighing on it are indicative of what is happening more broadly on Earth, and which is affecting the citizens of our planet more and more every day. When natural forces come into play, humans are never far behind, ultimately becoming both the enemy and savior of their own heritage.

Heritage of the Maritime Silk Roads in Peninsular Thailand: memorial appropriation conflicts

By Bérénice Bellina, archaeologist at the CNRS

The ancient cosmopolitan ports of Thailand and peninsular Burma are being pillaged for the glass and semi-precious rock beads they contain. These crystallize demands, which are of a memorial, identity or religious order. The past and present socio-political importance of pearls shows that heritage is still “alive” and gives rise to multiple and potentially conflicting interpretations and practices, such as the pillaging and destruction of the early settlements of the Maritime Silk Routes.

Threats to coastal archaeological heritage in the Mediterranean, the example of Malia

By Laurent Lespez, geographer at the University of Paris Est-Créteil

The Minoan city of Malia developed on the edge of the Aegean Sea. These spaces are undergoing changes linked to both marine conditions (climate change and rise in sea level, increased frequency of storms, decline in coastal sand stocks and erosion of the coastline) and direct actions of societies (coastal urbanization, tourist overcrowding). In this context, the local alliance for the preservation of coastal environments and heritage offers a window of hope.
