Janick “Jack” Baggenstos (23) is one of the most successful videographers of football stars.

The Zurich native creates videos that combine lifestyle and sport for big names.

He has already had Lionel Messi, David Alaba and Memphis Depay in front of his lens.

At 20 minutes he talked regarding his life.

Janick “Jack” Baggenstos, how would you describe your job?

I make short films for footballers to improve their social media presence and provide insights into their lives.

How did the whole thing start?

First I made videos of colleagues. Like today’s Bellinzona professional Stephan Seiler, with whom I grew up in Wetzikon and played football in the same club. Every now and then I filmed him with my Go-Pro camera and shared it on social media. Thanks to Instagram, the whole thing developed dramatically, from videos for 3rd and 4th league footballers to finally being able to film Lionel Messi. I never expected that.

You made the Messi video on the occasion of his Miami presentation. Were you able to speak to him?

Yes, a little small talk. We were together in a dressing room for regarding 30 minutes as we planned individual scenes for the video there. He made a very calm and friendly impression on me.

Which stars have you worked with besides Messi?

There are now a lot of well-known names. David Alaba, Ivan Rakitic, Memphis Depay, Raphael Leão, Alphonso Davies, Luis Diaz, Moise Kean and Karim Adeyemi. Also with Swiss national team players like Noah Okafor, Ruben Vargas and Kevin Mbabu.

And how did it go with Rakitic?

Rakitic’s transfer from Barcelona to Sevilla was one of my first major projects. He had the same advisor as Stephan Seiler back then. He contacted me. At first I didn’t take it too seriously. Then it became more concrete and it suddenly said: “You have to go to Barcelona to see Ivan next week.” At that time I still had a normal office job and had to explain to my boss that I would be missing two or three days of work. He almost didn’t believe me at first and didn’t understand how I got to such people. As a big football fan, he gave me the day off. In Barcelona I filmed Ivan’s farewell at the Camp Nou with all the trophies, the trip to Seville and his presentation to his new club.

Do you write to the players or how is the contact process going?

The players contact me, mostly via Instagram. Sometimes it also goes through their consultants or larger brands.

What is your recipe for success?

It’s a mix of many things. My creativity, the necessary eye for detail and, above all, my will have brought me here. The most difficult thing is to capture moments that cannot be repeated. If I’m accompanying a player’s transfer for a video, I can’t tell him: “Get off the private jet five more times.” He does that once and then it has to be right. In addition to the work itself, you have to understand what makes a footballer tick. Once you have played football yourself, you can better empathize with the players. The surroundings with lifestyle, fashion and music are just as important. It helps if you approach such big personalities in an uncomplicated and open manner. Such encounters are not always easy.

You also know some national team stars. What do you remember regarding an experience with one of them?

The evening before a Champions League game once morest Wolfsburg, Noah Okafor, his half-brother and I went out to eat in the city. On the way home, another driver cut us off. Noah’s half-brother was at the wheel and was able to avoid the worst and avoid the worst at the last moment. We ended up in an electrical box far from the road. It was like in the movies. Luckily no one was injured. Only the car was badly damaged. The next day, Noah scored his first two goals in the Champions League. After the game we drove past the accident site once more. We looked at each other and everyone laughed.

Who else do you really want to make a video for?

Cristiano Ronaldo is and remains a dream for me. I’ve been a fan of his for as long as I can remember. Karim Benzema is also on my list, he inspired me to make all these videos. In addition to footballers, I would like to do a project with the rapper Lil Baby.

Have you ever had an offer from a club?

After I made a video for David Alaba following a “Clásico”, Real Madrid contacted me. We had a few conversations regarding a future together. The offer was very tempting, but there were also aspects that did not correspond to my vision. I declined the offer and focused even more on my own things.

They also have their own podcast where footballers are guests. What is your goal with this?

We want to reach and inspire young people. Give you an insight into our lives and the lives of our guests. Our conversations are on a very collegial basis, we have big plans for the future and want to be among the best with our “SAY LESS” podcast.
