If you live in the Dombasle sector, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, you will need to make sure to close your windows tightly next night. The instruction is formulated by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the district town hall following the detection of three cases of dengue in the neighborhood. An investigation orchestrated by the health authority would have established the presence of adult tiger mosquitoes, vectors of the virus, in the area concerned.
The convergence of these three cases and the presence of insects therefore obliges the authorities to treat a precise perimeter of this sector. The procedure requires that an “anti-vector control operation” takes place within a radius of 150 m around the home of people contaminated by dengue, an infection which occurs largely in tropical areas. According to our information, the infected people are a couple and their child, returning from Martinique.
This operation is planned for the night of Friday to Saturday, from 2 a.m. It should last a couple of hours. It will be carried out by the ARS and the Regional Mosquito Control Agency in order to reduce the health risk. The authorities will use approved insecticide products which will be sprayed into the air.
Some instructions to follow
“This operation is very localized,” reassures Philippe Goujou, mayor (LR) of the 15th arrondissement. Residents will not notice anything. The system is very complete to eradicate the insect, we have the experience of that which was carried out in the 13th century a few days ago. This Thursday evening, the councilor sent a letter by post to 1,500 addresses in this small area straddling rue de la Convention and rue de Vaugirard to communicate the few instructions to be respected.
“We ask them to leave their windows closed, residents will have to confine their pets and put away objects and anything lying around on the balconies,” specifies the elected official. The police headquarters services will ensure that traffic is prohibited for pedestrians and motorists in the few streets concerned for the duration of the operation.
Insecticide in school grounds
In this sector, there are restaurants which will have to close before 2 a.m. Schools also in which the health authorities, on board a van, should stop, particularly in planted courtyards, in order to spray the insecticide. “Since the beginning of the 2000s, the tiger mosquito has been in France, moving northwards as a result of global warming,” analyzes Philippe Goujon.
