What are the changes between the Series 9 and Series 8 Apple Watches?

A Apple launched new iPhones and Apple Watches this week. In the case of watches, the Apple Watches Ultra 2 e Series 9 — which, although they haven’t received as many aesthetic changes, have some new features and differences in relation to their predecessors.

Much of the time devoted to watches in the presentation was used to talk regarding Apple’s green efforts, so the Apple Watch Series 9 became neutral in carbon emissions. In addition, however, we have other more tangible changes in the use of the device.

Shall we check out the changes?

Design

The design of the Apple Watch Series 9 case remains basically the same as the previous model, including the same sizes of 41 and 45 millimeters.

The novelty in this aspect was the new color rosa, available in the aluminum model. Otherwise, the color options are the same as the previous version — midnight, stellar, silver and (PRODUCT)RED — including the stainless steel models (gold, silver and graphite).

Furthermore, in favor of changes in the name of sustainability, bracelets made of leather were abandoned, as were leather covers for iPhones. In place of these accessories, we now have options made with a new material called FineWovenwhich includes 68% recycled plastic in its manufacturing.

Bodies

In this aspect, there was a very welcome change: with the Series 9, the maximum display brightness went from 1,000 to 2.000 nits, reaching up to 1 nit in darker environments (such as a bedroom or cinema). This is great news, which will certainly contribute a lot to the usability of the new watches.

Other than that, both generations have displays with the same resolution, being 396×484 pixels in the 45mm model and 352×430 pixels in the 41mm model.

In addition, we still have an OLED displayOrganic light-emitting diodeor organic light-emitting diode.”>1 LTPOLow-temperature polycrystalline oxidor low-temperature polycrystalline oxide.”>2 with Always-On Display support. The material also continues to be Ion X glass in models made in aluminum and sapphire crystal in those with a stainless steel case.

Performance and specifications

This is the area with the most significant changes to the Apple Watch Series 9. The chipset S9 — which equips the new model — has a CPUCentral processing unitor central processing unit.”>3 two-core and 5.6 billion transistors — 60% more than the S8. In terms of graphics processing, the new chip is 30% more powerful than the previous model.

4 cores were also added Neural Engine, which processes the artificial intelligence and machine learning part of the device, which are up to 3x faster. As a result, it is possible to use Siri even without an internet connection on the new models (for some functions on the device), in addition to the Dictation feature becoming 25% faster compared to the Apple Watch Series 8.

We also have the addition of second generation ultra-wideband chip, offering even greater precision than the previous one, the U1. With this, it will be possible to use the Precise Search feature to find devices from the iPhone 15 line, which also have the new chip, in addition to controlling playback on a HomePod by bringing the watch closer to the smart speaker.

Capacities, connectivity and battery

Apple Watch Series 9 maintains water resistance to a depth of up to 50 meters and certification IPX6 dust resistance. There is also the chip W3 for wireless connections.

In terms of storagethere is something new: now, the new models have 64GB of internal space, compared to 32GB in the previous model. In practice, however, this means that you can store 16GB (up from 8GB) of music and podcasts directly on the watch, as Apple limits this space.

As for connectivity, we also have the same compatibility for GPS/GNSS, LTE, UMTS (in the case of the GPS + Cellular model), Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 5.3, specifications also present in the Series 8 model. International roaming on more than 30 operators around the world also continues to be available (in the Wi-Fi + Cellular model).

The battery, in turn, received no changes compared to the previous version. They are the same 18 hours promised autonomy, or 36 hours with Low Power Mode activated.

Features and sensors

The main novelty in terms of resources is the Double Tap (Double Tap). You can use it to perform certain actions, such as answering/hanging up a call or taking a photo, by making a pinching movement and/or moving your index finger upwards twice, so that the back of the watch identifies the touches — which is done through a machine learning algorithm and the detection of changes in blood circulation with movement. This feature will be made available through a future watchOS update, according to Apple.

Furthermore, with improvements in processing and the Neural Engine, the ability for Siri to access and record data from the Health app has been added (Health). So, it is now possible, for example, to ask regarding physical exercise or hours of sleep last night. Furthermore, for many things, Siri also started to work directly on the device, no longer requiring an internet connection.

Both generations are also equipped with features such as Accident Detection, Fall Detection and Emergency SOS, as well as high and low heart rate notifications, irregular heart rhythm notifications and an ECG app.

They also share the same sensors, including compass, always-on altimeter, third-generation optical heart sensor, high-intensity g-force accelerometer, high dynamic range gyroscope, and ambient light sensor.

Price and availability

Pre-sales of the new models have already started in some countries, so wide availability in these places will occur on the day September 22. Prices in Brazil are as follows: from R$5 mil (aluminum) and R$8.500 (stainless steel).

As always, the previous model was removed from the line — but the second-generation Apple Watch SE was maintained. It is not yet known exactly when the new watches will start to be sold in Brazil, but, if they follow what will possibly happen with the iPhones 15, the launch here should not take long.
